PINE GROVE ROAD

In this project the home owner wanted something that was "WOW" and light on the inside. We started with a 960 square foot, 2 bedroom, 1 bath, ranch style home with a walk out lower level, constructed in the late 70's, sitting on about 14 wooded acres. The exterior is solid rustic cedar. The windows were single pane double hung. The exterior doors had been upgraded a few years earlier. The interior was mostly painted paneled walls, carpeted floors, hollow core slab doors and conventional trim from that period. The kitchen cabinets were painted and in poor condition. The kitchen floor covering was walnut stained oak parquet. The bathroom had been partially remodeled with a new shower tub combination, vanity with matching storage cabinet. The bedrooms were of average size with large closet openings. The lower level was remodeled between 1997 - 2000. This remodel consisted of creating a laundry room, framing and finishing interior walls and ceilings, installing ceramic tile floor and recessed lighting. The trim was finished in soft maple base molding with walnut door trim. Also installed was a custom walnut cd storage center and walnut shelving.

What was done.

  • In order to fulfill the owner's wishes we removed all kitchen cabinets, paneling , windows, and interior doors. The wall in the kitchen enclosing the stair well to lower level was removed. After accomplishing this task we moved on to creating more light for the house.

    • We took the north wall in the living room which was void of windows and installed three new windows with prairie style nine light grills and a vented gas fireplace.

    • We also replaced the east picture window with two new double hung windows and the wall in the kitchen enclosing the stair well to the lower level was removed. The kitchen window and a bedroom window were also replaced to match all others.

    • The bathroom window was replaced by a garden window. Now that more light had been created in the home we turned to the problem of making it WOW. And WOW is what they got.

  • We started off by constructing a new half wall of glass block between the lower level and the kitchen. After that we installed rustic maple hardwood floor throughout the entire main level and Indian Multi-color slate in the entries.

  • We then constructed craftsman style kitchen cabinets and pantry made out of hickory, walnut and glass. Since lighting is an important aspect to creating an atmosphere in a house we used many techniques to accomplished this task.

    • In the kitchen we installed halogen lights in the cabinets, hanging pendants over the sink, halogen under cabinet lights, a chandelier, and sconces in the stair well. In the living room we installed seven recessed lights. We also installed three outdoor halogen flood lights to light up the woods. And all lighting is controllable by dimmers.

  • We also built a 6' X 38' deck off both bedrooms with new exterior doors, a ramp and a stairway
